According to the American Cancer Society, 34,360 new cases of oral cancer were detected in 2007 in the United States which resulted in 7,550 deaths. The most common risk factors of oral cancer are the excessive use of alcohol, smoking, and chewing tobacco. If Oral Cancer can be detected at an early stage, it can be easily removed and the survival rate is greater. Most early oral cancer screening detections are done by the dentists during a routine examination. At Dr. LaMura's office we use FDA Approved Vizilite Plus to help us detect oral cancer at its early stage.
Composite resin is a mixture of microscopic ceramic and glass particles dispersed in a plastic resin that can be bonded to teeth. The material comes in a wide range of shades and can be molded and sculpted to create almost any shape or contour. The fact that resin is bonded means a seal is formed to reduce any chance of leakage, which is common for silver fillings.
Crowns are for broken teeth, teeth that have had root canals, or teeth that cannot be restored with a filling. A bridge is several crowns fused together to offer a solution for replacing missing teeth. Implants are another alternative for replacing missing teeth. Crowns and bridges are typically made of all porcelain, but can include a combination of porcelain fused to metal.
Root canal treatment treats the inside of the tooth. Root canal treatment is necessary when the nerve becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety or causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a single tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, trauma to a tooth may cause nerve damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If nerve infection or inflammation is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Grinding of teeth has several consequences such as shortening of front teeth, flattening of the top surfaces of the back teeth, receding gums, sensitivity, and TMJ injury. For those that grind and clench their teeth, especially during the night and while sleeping, custom night guards are indicated.

It is typically done throughout the whole mouth, but may only be needed on a few teeth. Placement of Localized Antibiotic (Arestin) may be needed in deep pockets to help reduce sensitivity. Most patients needing this procedure will be put on a 3 month recall visit to help restore the health of the gum tissue and prevent the disease from recurring.
